"Batteries are like people - look after them and they will look after you". Börje Maleus CTEK.
Battery Chargers (installation not required):
Designed and developed in Sweden by some of the world's leading experts on battery technology, CTEK chargers have become the best-selling chargers of their type in
Scandinavia - where battery performance can be a serious issue! Whether you want to charge batteries in a boat,
car, truck or bus, caravan, motorhome or a motorbike, there's a CTEK
charger available which will ensure that you never suffer from a dead or
poorly performing battery again.
We think the CTEKs are excellent value for money, and that the MXS 5 & 7 are great chargers for motorhomes, RVs, and boats. This is what these multi-stage chargers actually give you for the money and why the more expensive ones still offer great value for money with those superb extra features (see table below charts) The new numbers succeed similar old ones so MXS 3600 becomes the 3.6 and the 7000 becomes MXS-7 / 7.0 etc, but all above the 3.6 are now full 8-stage chargers including the new MXS-5 ...
Not sure? - Start with the immensely popular MXS range especially the 3.6 / 5.0 / 7.0 !
New: CTEK Battery to Battery Charging with integrated Solar MPPT Option. The excellent new D250S Allows two DC power inputs - for example solar panel plus alternator and automatically selects the input giving the most power. It uses MPPT technology for maximum solar input under lower light conditions and also provides solar overspill to the starter battery to keep that well maintained too. Conveniently it works just fine even without a solar panel! With CTEK's usual top class multi stage charging and continuous output up to 20A it gives fast charging of the leisure batteries, and longer battery life too. Equally important this is part of a system so by adding a Smartpass it is possible to boost the maximum B2B charge up to 80 Amps. Various configurations are possible with just one example illustrated left. For a pdf of the full installation instructions please click here (new window/tab).
Standby Chargers: Devices to top up a secondary battery or battery bank once the main one is up to strength. The overspill charge is typically 2-3A maximum. In motorhomes these usually keep the starter battery topped up while the leisure batteries are connect to mains hook-up or solar power or even generator. No user input is required once installed it just automatically sends any surplus charging to the 'secondary' battery to counter the usual laid-up self-discharge and the current taken by alarms, radios, etc. Can also be used where there are two separated leisure batteries. Installation is straightforward with relatively lightweight cabling - the clever bit is in the electronics not the installation! PDF Instructions on request.
Sterling Auxiliary Battery Charger 3A: This battery charger/maintainer enables an extra battery bank to be kept 'topped up' from the main battery bank which has the charging device/s connected to it (alternator, mains charger, solar cells or wind power etc). The battery charger/maintainer works by detecting when the main battery bank being charged reaches 13.3V and then allows the excess power to be sent to the extra battery bank with only a minor voltage drop of 0.2V. This maintains the extra battery bank by charging it with several amps. A battery at rest is around 12.7v max so no current flows out of the leisure battery if there's no incoming charge, perfect. Note this is not a high charging device it's a really good maintenance device. Sterling quality (Queens Awards). For 12v only, 140x45x40mm 250g, output up to 3A at 12v nominal. Votronic Standby Charger 2A also know as a 'Battery Master': Flat vehicle battery after standing a few weeks? Vehicle batteries discharge over time and things like alarm systems and radios on standby discharge them too. Not noticeable on a car in regular use but a 100mA alarm will discharge a typical static vehicle battery in about 3-4 weeks! All this is inevitable there's nothing you can do about it To solve the problem some extra external charging is needed either via solar and/or hook-up. A few motorhomes have this 'overspill charging built-in but many don't, if yours is in the don't category just add this brilliant little device to add that feature while protecting the battery from discharge in other circumstances. Once fitted there's nothing to switch on or off or remember, it is truly fit & forget. Then as long as the leisure batteries are being charged via hook-up, solar panel or generator, a top-up current will flow to the starter battery and keep it in good condition and ready to start the engine when needed. Wiring is really simple too. WDH 90x60x38mm, Max Output Current: 2A, 52g. PDF Instructions on request. Buy Below >>> (PgDn)
SmartGuage: Merlin Advanced Battery Management - the very best of the 'easy ways' to manage batteries. If you’re serious about keeping an eye on what’s happening to your batteries, you need the Merlin SmartGauge. It shows how much power is left as a percentage of your available battery capacity by using incredibly complex computer modeling to measure state of charge and to calculate the % remaining. It works with all types of lead-acid battery, flooded, agm, gel, carbon, calcium, etc., and gives an extremely accurate readout of battery condition. All this is achieved with just a two wire connection or three if you want to monitor a second bank like the starter battery. This advanced battery monitor is easier to install, simpler to use and much more accurate than any other similar product; no standard amp-hour counter monitor or amp/volts gauge can achieve this level of accuracy! Sterling Mains Chargers 230-12v : Sterling have revamped their ProCharge range and have come up with the "ULTRA" providing reliable charging in a new robust and contemporary looking case - illustrated right. The "ULTRA" range has several new features including: ▪ 2 x digital meters for current and voltage measurement ▪ High voltage de-sulphation cycle ▪ Battery temperature sensor.
Why Sterling? Fabulous reputation, excellent products and premium performance at a sensible price. Queen's Award for Innovation too! "Sterling Power Products’ business plan is very simple. We design every conceivable performance and safety feature we can think of into our products; then we check our competitors just in case we missed something (however, we have never come across anything close). Having designed all the features we try to manufacture the products at a cost that will allow us to offer our customers a product with a high technical specification, but at the same time keeping the cost down". Sterling have always been horrified at the poor state of charge of most leisure batteries and have designed products to change all that. These multi-stage units push in the maximum charge consistent with looking after the battery correctly. They adapt to all kinds of battery from flooded 'wet' cells to GEL. The maximum charge for AGMs and GEL is necessarily rather less and presumably forms the basis of Charles Sterling's well-known personal dislike of them! Our best advice for reliable mobile power is add extra batteries and don't scrimp on the charger!
NEW: Pro-Charge Ultra Features: ▪ 11 pre programmed battery curves including lithium Lithium LiFePO4. ▪ 1 custom set, can be set from charger, no need for computer. ▪ 2 x digital meters for current and voltage measurement. ▪ 1x power meter to show what reserve power left on the unit. ▪ PFC, active, up to 0.99 pf, ensuring efficient power conversion, up to almost 90% as opposed to about 50% for older non PFC technology. ▪ New synchronised rectification output as opposed to diode output, giving up to a extra10% efficiency ▪ High voltage de-sulphation cycle. ▪ New, low activity, standby mode to increase battery life. ▪ Battery health program. ▪ Multiple speed fan control to reduce unnecessary fan noise experienced by the customer, even though the new extreme efficiency reduces the need for fans, at high ambient temperatures (40-50 deg c) fans would still be required to ensure operation. ▪ Primary (processor digitally controlled) and an emergency backup secondary (analogue controlled) high voltage trip. ▪ 32 L.E.D. information panel. ▪ Internal systems check. ▪ Optional Remote. ▪ Small footprint lightweight. ▪ Battery temperature sensor. ▪ As with all our marine compatible chargers all metals are non ferrous. Sterling Combined Inverter / Charger: Previously a very high cost product reserved only for luxury vehicles Sterling have smashed through the price barrier with these remarkable combined units. Not just combined but truly integrated with built in power sharing and priority to 230v mains, so the unit will fully and automatically manage the power supply between battery and mains without interruption; you could be watching TV on hook-up, and the unit would automatically switch over to the battery powered inverter if the hook-up was disconnected, all without the TV switching off. Also if the battery charger is already using a lot of power and you then switch on a high power hair dryer say, the battery charger will reduce its power consumption to ensure the hair dryer is suitably supplied from the mains power (shore power). Then after the dryer is switched off the charger will up its power output again to charge the batteries as fast as possible. All very clever and all quite invisible to the user. Four step fully automatic IUoU charger. Suitable for all types of lead-acid battery, wet, AGM & GEL up to approx. 600Ah (12V), 300Ah (24V). Maximum continuous charging current: 50 Amps (12V), 25 Amps (24V). Low voltage warning and cut-off at 10.5V (12V) / 21V (24V), high voltage warning and cut-off at 15.5V (12V) / 30V (24V), current overload & temperature protection. Remote control with 10M cable. Sterling Battery to Battery Charger (B2B Charger): Yes it sounds odd but this is a remarkable piece of kit. It is extremely easy to install and uses electronic wizardry to multi step-charge the leisure battery with surplus alternator output via a simple connection to the vehicle battery. It does this remarkably quickly and efficiently and at the same time puts in significantly more charge than any standard in-vehicle system achieves! Normally a fully charged starter battery signals the alternator to cut back its output and so starves the leisure batteries to some extent. This remarkable unit overcomes that as described below. Clever electronics keep everything under control ensuring batteries are always well cared for and recharging is remarkably quick. Peak performance is achieved with ordinary wet or flooded lead acid batteries but the unit has settings to allow AGM & GEL batteries to charge fully, albeit at a slightly lower rate. In a nutshell it charges your extra battery system about 5 times faster than it otherwise would (with a standard system) and puts in about 50% extra useable power as well as increasing the life of the batteries by de-sulphating them. In principle it falsifies the engine battery voltage to fool the alternator into continued high output and uses its own sophisticated electronics to transfer maximum safe charge to the leisure battery via a digitally controlled 4-step advanced charger. The unit's sophistication includes monitoring the main vehicle battery and alternator to make sure they protected at all times. All in all perfectly suited to the special 12v or 24v power needs of modern recreational vehicles, motorhomes, and boats. Buy Below >>> (PgDn)
Simple installation & wiring - just connect between the two batteries. No direct connection to the alternator. Main battery maintained correctly. Multiple units can be used. No voltage rise on the engine management system avoiding alarms etc. Batteries do not have to be close together. Charges to maximum capacity at up to 45 or 100 amps, giving up to 50% more useable charge and longer battery life. No vehicle warranty issues.
Sterling-Power - Features: • Installation does not get any easier, simply connect to your starter batteries and to your domestic battery, job done, makes for easy and low cost installation. • No direct connections to the standard engine alternator, or to the outboard (if used on an outboard), thus on new installations there is no extra wiring for a split charger system. • Ensures the engine battery if maintained and well looked after. • Multiple units can be used, for example if you have a 60 amp alternator and 3 battery banks (engine, domestic and bow thruster) then 2 of these can be used to run the now thruster and the domestic system. Their internal programs will adjust their charger patterns to accept the other unit and ensure only the excess power is used and the primary system is not placed in jeopardy. • Ensures there is no voltage rise on the engine management system, to ensure no alarms or damage to the system be it an outboard, or a car, or a boat. • No vehicle warranty issues as you are not connected to the main system.
The difference between cheap and expensive battery chargers: The way a battery is charged can make a huge difference to its performance and useful life. Simple, low-cost chargers will just boost the battery at a constant voltage without taking into account its overall condition. The battery will never be fully charged and, if there should be anything wrong with it, such as a faulty cell, it could be seriously damaged. More expensive chargers such as CTEK or Sterling IUoU models use sophisticated circuitry to vary the charging current according to the battery’s requirements (multi-stage charging), ensuring that it stores the maximum power possible. Unlike some cheap units, they can be safely left connected to the battery indefinitely. Even batteries that are being constantly charged by an on-board charger can benefit greatly from a regular session on an IUoU charger. Sterling are a Queens Award Company. Other Sterling products quoted on request. It is especially important to have a top notch charger with higher capacity battery banks and where the charging-discharging pattern is poor - long periods out of use, deep discharging, generator top-ups, etc. - our lifestyle is noted for ruining batteries!
How to choose which size of battery charger is required: For optimum performance a normal battery charger should have a minimum output power of around 10% of the battery’s Ah rating. For example, a battery with a 100 Amp/hour rating benefits from use of a charger which is rated at least 10 Amps. Using a 7 Amp model won’t do any harm, it just won’t work as efficiently and will take longer to charge the battery. We'd say 5% (1/20th) is the minimum usable ratio - so a 4.3A charger for an 85Ahr battery for example. A 20 Amp or even bigger model will of course work perfectly well as long as the output is properly regulated - as is the case with all these better quality chargers.
Whatever your charging system remember the old adage "A bigger piggy bank only gives you more money if you fill it first"! Our best advice for reliable mobile power is to add extra batteries first but don't scrimp on the charger, a good one fills faster and gives longer battery life too !
