New for 2018/19: The fabulous easy-drop-in Relion Lithium range plus the Pure Lead Carbon and Xtreme ranges now online below. What's the best Lithium battery replacement for a motorhome? See below!
LEOCH,POWER THE GALAXY
An ambitious claim - but they do supply power backup, ups & power supplies, electric vehicles, traction, start-stop automotive, motorcycle, deep cycle leisure & dual purpose batteries, marine applications, etc!
As seen on TV! Countryfile filmed a geologist looking at underground shafts and voids after the floods and he was using an 'Energy' battery as his source of reliable mobile power for sensitive instruments.
Now available: Relion Lithium-Iron batteries for motorhomes, more product info lower down and to buy at the bottom of the page. Incredible developments really offering half the weight with twice the usable power! Adding the very long life and very high resistance to ultra-deep discharge damage makes a great package, no accidents here either the internal electronics both control and protect charge & discharge. All-in-one design gives easy DIY, just drop it in! As seen at the NEC. And now very affordable too being around half the price of the early versions - time to buy!
Relion - Leoch Leisure Battery line-up: We're pleased to now offer six great battery ranges in our new Relion - Leoch Leisure Battery series. All have been chosen to offer excellent value for money within their different application groups and all offer premium construction for reliability and performance. Both SFL and AGM ranges include NCC Approved-verified units rated as Class A Leisure. Welcome features like visual charge indicators, minimal self discharge for seasonal leisure use, excellent sealing, great low temperature and starting performance plus Leoch calcium technology all make for a great product for both leisure and for starting motorhomes or marine. The newly added Pure Carbon and Lithium Ranges have particular premium characteristics of their own, see below for more information and spec sheets.
1. SFL Adventurer is a sealed 'wet/flooded' range with a 3 year warranty. Calcium lead alloy technology maintenance-free design for use where discharge isn't routinely extra deep. Great pricing too.
2. SMF Adventurer Energy is a Sealed Lead Acid 'fit and forget' range for use where the sealed-maintenance-free and non-spill spill-resistant characteristic is important. Similar to the SFL/FLA and with 2 year warranty but uplifted with improved Calcium-Lead plate technology. Not much dearer.
3. AGM Adventurer range is designed for deeper discharging leisure use - as is typical in off-grid motorhomes - but also beneficial in all motorhomes not least due to the more difficult winter/storage conditions. Great for use with caravan motor-movers too. Best quality construction plus the Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) technology means 4x-5x the life cycles of a standard battery when deeper cycling is involved (deeper is typically >50% DOD). These units are totally sealed and can even be used on their sides, very suitable for internal location. The best and naturally one of the dearer items in this battery range but with lowest-total-cost-of-ownership. 3 year warranty. Our own favourite.
4. LPX XTREME series are robust AGMs designed to give exceptional cold cranking ability in each amp-hour rating plus a very slow self-discharge & high resistance to deep discharge, so ideal for motorhomes, motor moving, and for back-up use in the smaller sizes. Please note the terminals vary within the range please see this Xtreme pdf flyer for guidance (click).
Our supplier says of this range: • oxygen recombination technology maintenance free • PbCaSn alloy for plate grids, less gassing, less self-discharging • High quality AGM separator, extended cycle life and prevents micro short circuit • ABS material increases the strength of battery container • High purity raw material which ensures low self discharge rate • Silver coated copper terminals, brass insert terminal and lead terminals improve the electric conductivity • Primary lead technology for optimum performance • AGM Absorbed Glass Matt - For demanding environments • Deep cycles - 4 x longer life than normal batteries • Totally sealed for life - Unspillable & safe, totally MF • Minimal self discharge - Ideal for seasonal use and as backup • Increased starting power - even at low temps • Great looks, great performance, premium product".
The product code like 'XR1500' refers to the Pulse Hot Cranking Amps PHCA, this is different to the Cold Cranking Amps CCA often quoted for automotive use and where known we quote CCA in the descriptions.
5. Pure Lead Carbon batteries are quite new to the leisure market but are well established in industrial sectors like Communication Base Stations, Electric Power Systems, Solar & Wind Energy Stations, Data Centres & Uninterruptible Power Supplies. It is fairly recent technology with significant developments from 2009 - 2011 mostly - but with exciting possibilities for motorhomes now the cost has come down to something more reasonable. Classic motorhome / caravan 100AH/C10 battery, ~2500 cycles @ 60% DOD, 20 year design life, recovers from dead flat, pictured right.
Why? Well mostly • Long design life of 15 years or more • High Power Density & Energy Density with Small Footprint • Fast/very fast charging* • Very low self-discharge • Exceptional deep cycle* capability even including recovery from total discharge • Superior performance when only partially charged. * fantastically fast with high amp chargers like battery-to-battery units but also somewhat faster with standard AGM chargers, * amazing deep cycle of 2500/3000x at 60% DOD.
All those great features are are normally seen as problem areas when off-grid in a motorhome so these are real problem solvers. The popular motorcaravan size and layout is illustrated above right. Where do these batteries sit in the total picture for leisure batteries? - above the high performing AGMs and GELs and alongside traction & self-start types but below Lithium. With their pricing similar to GEL and way below Lithium and with no special charger/ing needed they work perfectly well with your existing AGM compatible charger and brilliantly with a B2B charger so a great choice. Downsides? Only the weight really but do remember that the astounding performance does mean you can sometimes choose to fit a physically smaller battery with a lower AH capacity and still get the performance you need!
Leoch's implementation includes 'Advanced grid structure, enhancing charging acceptance ability while decreasing charging current density so these are really top notch products - just as you'd expect to find in solar & wind farms and data centres!
Differences between the two lead Carbon ranges: LRCF are a bit cheaper than PLH+C with the same cycles but they don’t charge as fast ; PLH+C are the ultra fast chargers and with better PSOC (Performance when in a Partial State Of Charge). LRCF are vertical format but can be used horizontally albeit with an unconventional terminal layout. Please Note that some batteries from both ranges are tall & thin with front terminals as picture right so more suited to new installations than to replacements - and in 12v or 2v form ideal for creating large battery banks maybe in odd spaces. 6. New: Litihum-Iron LiFePO4 (LFP) - the safest lithium chemistry: The RELiON Battery Company, with global headquarters in South Carolina, USA, is a premium provider of Lithium and R4000 Dry Series batteries, they are represented in the UK by DBS Energy and our batteries are shipped factory fresh direct to you from the DBS warehouse. DBS have UK National Caravan Council Approvals too. Both as seen at NEC.
All RELiON LiFePO4 Batteries have installation flexibility, fast-charging capabilities, low toxicity, are maintenance free and maintain consistent power throughout discharge and long life - a product of the age. Relion are equipped with standard T6/T8 terminals (+ posts) and a built-in battery management system (BMS), these self contained electronics lead to really easy DIY installation just re-using existing wiring and charger/s - drop-in and go! The RB series batteries meet UL, UN, CE and IEC certifications. RB-DIN batteries are usually lower height to simplify replacement in tighter spaces. In general the max continuous discharge current is the same numerically as the amp-hour rating and max peak is around twice that. The BMS will cut out at amps somewhat greater than the nominal max to protect the battery from accidental damage and/or overheating, there is a low voltage voltage cut out to protect that end too. These are not really as starter batteries by the way, see tech data sheet links below for more info, The recommended charging regime is at 14.2-14.6v with 14.4v balancing, i.e. within a normal charger or alternator or solar controller range. They will accept fast charging up to 100A so really great with B2B chargers too. Other benefits: 50-60% less weight for the same AH rating - 'half the weight with twice the usable power' (so lower AH rating substitution is also perfectly possible); around 10x greater cycle life than a lead acid equivalent; full power available throughout discharge - no drop-off as with lead-acid types; no effect on total cycles as long as discharge is within ~90(+)% of capacity - as protected by the built in BMS; much more efficient at low temperatures; very low self discharge in storage; no damage from storing partially charged so ideal for winter storage even after using a motor mover say (50% recommended); no gassing - so use on side or upright, unvented. Relion arranty is 6 years but the design life is considerably more. We're offering the common 12v versions here but there are both smaller and larger batteries available (200 & 300AH have end rather than side terminals) also some 24v available, email us if interested. These are the batteries of the future available now! Click to jump to Relion purchases.
PS: Same battery chemistry as DeWalt, Daimler AG (Mercedes, Smart), Cessna and BAE (Electric Drive).

Best Lithium Battery for Motorhome? Always a big question - what is the best something?! But assuming we're talking about a replacement leisure battery here then the answer is fairly simple, it will have:- a) the same or similar physical size ; b) the same terminal layout normally on the long edge as L0 (+RH) or L1 (+LH) (when viewed with terminals nearest to you) ; c) integrated internal electronics to deal with the differences between traditional chargers / alternators / solar and the particular needs of Lithium without you having to worry about it - plug and play as it were. Also it will probably have:- d) LiFePO4 chemistry, a particular variety of Lithium Ion with the high user safety needed for use in a motorhome ; e) similar or slightly lower AH capacity to your existing because more of that is actually usable with Lithium ; f) an affordable price tag on a reputable brand that will still be around to honour that long warranty - so probably neither cheapest nor dearest. Naturally enough you can bend these things around a bit to suit yourself, by all means have a bigger AH rating if you have the room and the budget, use a smaller AH rating to save weight without losing overall performance, or change the layout if you feel up to some heavy duty rewiring. But - for most of us it will be better to stick to the list above. Can we meet all that? Yes of course ...
If you arrived here direct from a link, it might be best to start further up to see the full battery range info?

Layouts? (NB We supply the posts to go with these).
New AHr Ratings C20: A note about published battery capacities. Standards for testing battery capacity were revised recently and we are all encouraged to quote C20 values rather than the C100 values previously preferred by the manufacturers. At the moment some of the Ahrs we quote above are the 100hr ratings as are the battery code numbers but we will add 20hour figures as we get them to give you the C20/100 rating - as already on our AGMs
Venting - A word of caution: Because leisure batteries situated in the living areas of motorhomes are in an enclosed space, and because under some circumstances escaping charge gasses can explode, all camper batteries should be totally sealed or be vented to the outside or have special flame arresting vents. This is one of the reasons that GEL are favoured by manufacturers because most are properly and totally sealed as are our AGMs, you can even use them on their sides.
Unfortunately the term 'sealed' doesn't always mean what we think it means; persistent enquiries about several budget 'sealed' batteries on the internet produced responses along the lines of "Thank you for your enquiry. It is sealed only in the sense that the battery cannot be topped up ... this battery must be fitted in a vented space". This is also true of our budget SFL range. Anyway do beware, not everyone really knows what their 'sealed' means but we do!
How long will it last? As with all vehicle batteries the life is really the number of discharge cycles rather than years. Also a slight discharge followed by top-up only counts as a fraction of a full cycle whereas a deep discharge to near-flat counts as an aggressively full cycle and shortens battery life as per the charts. This is why a starter battery and a lightly used leisure battery lasts for maybe twice its warranty, maybe even more whereas a heavily used and/or under-specified leisure battery fails at roughly its warranty life. If you want best life buy well, have ample capacity, and don't run it/them down too far. Using low power gadgets like LED lights help too, big discharges via large inverters really don't help unless you have multiple batteries. But - our batteries are for starting as well as leisure so better than many in this respect!
