  Mobile Broadband - 4G - MiFi - Wifi

Quote of the moment: "no hesitation in using your company again & recommending to friends." PW

New product: Kuma Wifi Booster Kit:

Boost Caravan, Motorhome and Boat wifi with ease. The Kuma WiFi package is a complete solution to pick up and boost an external WiFi signal and repeat it at full strength. This allows you to create your own locally secure wireless network in your leisure vehicle and share the boosted connection with all your devices. Everything you need to boost and share a motorhome WiFi connection is included. Gets good reviews online.

The system is compatible with any device which is WiFi enabled, even if it does not have a USB port. You can connect your laptop, iPad, tablet, smartphone or Kindle all at the same time! There are no disks or drivers to install on your devices and no wires between you and the system. The package consists of two main components – The Kuma High-Powered Long Range Directional WiFi Antenna which will pick up any available WiFi network as far away as 1.5km and the Kuma Wireless Repeater which will enable you to rebroadcast this boosted signal. Also included is a 5m USB cable to connect the antenna with the receiver, mounting kit, as well as 12v DC and 230v AC power supplies.

Directional aerials like this take a few seconds longer to set up than omnis but outperform omni-directional units every time!  This is of course an amplified unit so if there's no signal available or it is being 'perimeter blocked' by the provider it can't 'magic one up' out of nowhere - but where there is a faint and maybe unusable open signal it can pull it in at usable strength - amazing. Extremely handy for using free wifi hotspots and even campsite wifi when it's a bit further away from comfortable parking than the signal expects!  Buy below >>>

An optional extra feature set is provided with our own 4G pocket WiFi / MiFi allowing access and sharing of a 3G/4G mobile data connection when wifi isn't available.  This does need a data sim of course - Monthly or PAYG, or One-off bulk Data type. Also coming soon a less sophisticated but compatible 3G 'dongle'.

Kuma 4G Internet Access / Mobile Broadband / MiFi on the move:

Introducing the brand new 4G Mobile Pocket WiFi Kit with external antenna. Simply insert any sim card and share the internet connection with up to 5 devices: smartphones, tablets, iPads or computers. The external antenna allows you to take the phone company's data signal from outside and use the internet inside your caravan, boat, motorhome or truck. Based around a quality high performance dongle by Huawei.

Your own private and secure internet access (almost) wherever you are. With our need for customer data privacy we've been using this system for years. The SIM can be PAYG or one-off bulk data or monthly subscription and with schemes like 3's Feel at home is now very affordable throughout Europe. It used to be thought something of a luxury but many people now see it as an essential element in their lives. And not just Internet Access but at Mobile Broadband performance levels too!

Designed perfectly with you in mind, set up in less than 2 minutes with no technical knowledge required, letting our kit do all the work. unlocked so simply use any 4G data sim with our product and receive the internet anywhere in the world. Our 4G Router kit is specifically designed to put 4G WiFi internet in your caravan, motorhome, boat or horsebox and comes with an adaptor to perfectly fit and connect all universal sim cards into the device. No 4G signal in your area?  No problem. our kit is backwards compatible with 3G or even down to 2G speeds. This won't allow you to stream movies, but at least a basic internet connection will keep you in touch with the outside world.

Kit includes a powerful 28dBi Antenna with 3-meter cable which can work up to with speeds 150Mbps to help improve your signal. The long lasting 1500mAh battery can be charged via a supplied 2.0 USB cable, so no direct power source is required to use the kit. Connect up to 5 devices at the same time wirelessly with your Smartphone, Tablet or Computer to this lightweight pocket router - MiFi. Weighing 280g it's perfect when on the go or even for use on holiday in a Caravan, Motorhome or Boat when standard WiFi is not available or not sufficiently private.

Public WiFi is increasingly available albeit often unsecured and somewhat unreliable.  MiFi devices like ours using 3G / 4G Cellphone data offer a private secured connection at modest cost. The Huawei MiFi in Black pictured above right (hover mouse over pics for info) includes an informative screen and internal battery that is charged via USB or it can be continuously powered via USB. It connects automatically. This is our our own preferred connection route using 3's Feel at Home scheme when in Europe. Twin antenna sockets too*.

* Like all receivers they can suffer reduced performance inside a metal boxed vehicle but using an water resistant external antenna like this or simply placing the MiFi unit outside the box can improve reception and performance greatly, I used to put my dongle out via a skylight before I linked it to an installed roof antenna.

Info & Tips Section:  (if not of interest - click here to go straight to product info)  There are choices as ever.   Satellite broadband is everyone's dream because it offers worldwide high bandwidth internet access pretty much wherever you are, the down side is the high capital cost and high running costs.  At the other end of the cost scale is free Public WiFi. It's rarely quite free of course you may have to pay to park or buy goods to get access or travel out of your way to find it. An aerial helps greatly with reception say on a campsite pitch a little way from the transmitter. The downsides are a lack of privacy & security in these open connections - never use it for banking!  In the middle ground there is the cellphone/mobile data solution. Outlay is modest for the devices and the running cost is now modest even roaming in Europe on the Monthly or PAYG or one-off bulk data options available. There's increasingly good performance over wide areas, all now supplemented by optional external aerial/s. European roaming is much, much, cheaper than it was, now with no on-cost at all in many circumstances. The private and secured connection offered is increasingly important to many of us not least because professional villains and nerdy teenagers all seem keen to hack into anything they can see!  In MiFi form multiple devices are supported and secured. There are none of the 'tethering' issues that plague some phone contracts and later phones / apps can use the wireless data for whatsapp, facetime, facebook, mapping, satnav, etc. - even switching over seamlessly for calls on some phones. Ideal for tablets and laptops and mixes well with smartphones - you can use it to access phone-data-cost-saving apps like SmartTalk & Skype even with data roaming turned off while abroad on your holidays - so even works with restricted phones/contracts like budget supermarket deals.

Do we communicate on the move ourselves? Yes we certainly do and have been doing so in various motorhomes at quite a serious level for most of this millennium. Serious in the sense that we use both personal and business email and web browsing including site page modification on a near daily basis both here in GB and also away in the motorhome in Europe. Public Wifi was, and is, initially very appealing for internet access because it's notionally free but we found too many drawbacks in practice. Apart from the security & privacy issues it proved far from free if you need to detour and to buy something to get web access that may anyway be indifferent and insecure. (if not of interest - click here to go straight to product info)

These days our various Smart-devices also want to connect to the internet for an amazing range of services including everything from Whatsapp and Skype to Facebook & TV, from SatNav updates to Diesel, LPG, and Fiat Professional service locations, not to mention finding tourist info, aires, campsites, restaurants, NT & RSPB properties, news, weather forecasts, and more; it's all just part of everyday life now. Apps like Skype Whatsapp and SmartTalk can save significant amounts of money while we're abroad too. With some irritating restrictions on tethering smartphones we prefer to use a dedicated secure mifi data device. Most of my family are shocked if there's no shared internet in the camper these days, no matter where we are!

When away we need to be in touch with our business almost daily and often in a fairly intensive way - we receive hundreds of emails every day and also receive orders every day of the year except Christmas Day (so far!). Our colleagues are always at base of course, doing the 'donkey work', but we do still need regular, reliable, secure, internet access with little in the way of data restriction - at least if & when we decide we need more data for a specific task. When working like this I prefer to use the comfortable office in our motorhome with everything to hand and not to be in or parked next to a McDonalds for hours on end!  Add to this the security and privacy concerns around dealing with customer data over an open public network and you can maybe see why we prefer to use our own private multi-device access via the cellphone network and a secured connection.

Many years ago when we first trialled it on a 'dongle' this technology was painfully slow and also painfully expensive in Europe but the advent of 3G Data and now 4G Data plus the convenience of multi-user mifi plus harmonised roaming rates in Europe have changed all that. Our first 3G was via a Data-only dongle with Vodaphone on a 10/day-used deal for, what was then, quite a lot of data. Then MiFis arrived and the deal reduced in price once the move towards unifying and reducing roaming rates got underway but 7-8/day-used was still normal.

Then our new friends 3 came along with their 'Feel at Home' deal - where you could use your UK Mifi Data allowance in France with no extra charge so just as if you were still back in the UK. Not only that but they promised to extend this to other countries too - almost too good to be true!  They were true to their promise too, Feel-at-Home is now available in nineteen countries including eleven in Europe and still growing. Does it work? Yes, a resounding yes in fact. Our first trip on this scheme took us on a long and winding rural route almost to the Mediterranean and only once were we unable to get a 3G signal albeit there were just a few locations where low signal strength and slower data made life a little difficult - much on a par with being back in the UK in fact. Reception was mostly excellent, better than the UK, especially with the MiFi device lodged in the roof vent. Now upgraded to 4G and with a roof antenna we find speeds are even better, genuinely 'mobile broadband' at last - and 4G is now pretty widely available; where not 3G is the fall back - and may be the default on 'roaming'.

We now use a monthly 5Gig SIM-only contract to cover most of our needs but also have a PAYG SIM that we swap to if running out of allowance and need more data temporarily (not often since upgrading to 5Gig/month), all this seems to work just fine. Some use a single payment SIm for bulk data, say 20 or 30Gb, do check how long before it expires though, some suppliers are very good on this point but some products / suppliers aren't.  (if not of interest - click here to go straight to product info)

Sticking with public WiFi? - then a good WiFi Antenna is of course just the thing and this is a great solution for those wanting less critical internet access on campsites and other places offering pubic wifi so we also offer impressive temporary & installable wifi antennae. These wifi aerials will pick up signals at some considerable distance subject to obstacles and to some extent weather systems; there are reports from boats of a surprising range of 'many miles' to & from shore based wifi. Very often a decent signal and the best parking are anything but close to each other - even on campsites - so our WiFi extender kit neatly solves that issue for you and you won't have to give up your treasured spot by the view or loo or away from the road just to be able to use the WiFi.  NB: The antenna for wifi and 3/4G are different.

Hopefully all this helps understanding and importantly that we can offer customers appropriate help and good advice to those of you about to take the plunge or upgrade - and even some ongoing support too.

NO PICTURE, LOOKS LIKE A USB STICK.

Kuma Unlocked mini Dongle  (No stock June 2018)

For use with the Kuma WiFi Hotspot Package enabling you to access and share a 3G internet connection. It has been tested extensively and the results were very favourable regarding gain and performance. This dongle is supported by Kuma, and so is recommended for use with the WiFi Hotspot Package. A benefit of the Kuma Dongle is that it comes complete with a magnetic antenna to boost the 3G signal, so you can receive the same signal inside as is outside your metal vehicle/vessel.
(I prefer the Huawei myself but this is good too).
